2006-2007 School Report Card

James Madison Intermediate School is a learning community that serves approximately 500
students in grades three through five.  Although the diverse cultures, values, customs, languages, traditions, and religious influences of our students span a wide range, they merge here to form a colorful tapestry of educational experience.  Our goal is to educate the “whole child” by providing learning experiences that promote academic, social, and emotional growth. Our classrooms are learner-centered and focus on active learning experiences.

Our school community is well served by our teachers, support staff, and parents. Balanced literacy is the core of our reading and writing program.  Our academic programs are rigorous, and critical-thinking activities are embedded within our curriculum. Our students are taught to seek relevance and to make real-life connections to their learning. Our excellent physical education, visual arts, vocal and instrumental music programs, and Talents program enhance our students’ learning experiences. Our staff and students benefit from the services provided by our Curriculum Resource Teacher who provides staff development to our teachers on a daily basis.

Social development is essential to positive self-esteem and the ability to sustain positive relationships in collaborative learning experiences. Our Guidance Counselor actively promotes pro-social skills and assists students in dealing with conflicts.  Our Character Counts program emphasized the six pillars of character education: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.  Our School Nurse provides a “Growing Up” program to our fourth-grade students. The Edison Police Department presents the D.A.R.E. program to our fifth-grade students.

Students at James Madison Intermediate School continue to be inspired learners who strive to exceed the goals set for them by their teachers, administrators, and parents. Thus, our school level goals are to continue improving testing results, to develop technological skills, and to reinforce positive character traits which will enable us to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century.

Our goal at JMI is to provide a positive and safe learning community for our students. It is our belief that a culture of kindness and a positive learner-centered environment is imperative to academic success.
