“KIDS
HELPING KIDS” PROGRAM
Starting today
through May 31, the James Madison Intermediate and FDR
families will be participating in the “Kids Helping Kids”
Program. What could be more wonderful than seeing children
help other children?
A number of years
ago, the JFK Medical Center Foundation (Edison, NJ) created
“The Children’s Fund” to help enhance the pediatric services
at JFK. Such programs have included the creation of the
“Fast Track” Pediatric Emergency Room, the Children’s
Neurological Center, the Pediatric Rehabilitation Program,
etc. As a result, JFK records over 30,000 pediatric visits
annually!
Recently they added
the ‘’Kids Helping Kids’’ program . . . a program with a
very ‘’personal touch.’’ The hospital can be a frightening
place, not only for patients, but for visitors as well. For
children, experience is intensified by the visible anxiety
they may see on the faces of their parents or loved ones.
This program helps JFK to alleviate that anxiety by
providing a simple gift to all children who come to JFK – as
a patient or as a visitor. Once a gift is presented,
children are quickly relaxed and distracted from their
surroundings. As parents, when we see our child’s tension
eased, our own anxiety diminishes. The gesture is simple
but becomes extraordinary . . . especially when it’s
explained that the gift is from another child in town.
The toys that are
to be donated must be "hospital appropriate". By that, we
mean something small, manageable, quiet and with minimal
parts. Some suggestions are: cars and trucks, board games
and hand-held games, squeaky toys (for infants),
activity/puzzle books, etc., and dolls and action figures.
The hospital requests no plush or stuffed animals. All
gifts should be unwrapped.
If you would like
to participate, please send in your donation to your child’s
homeroom teacher any time during the month of May.
In the “Spirit of
Giving” . . . Thanks in advance for participating in this
heartwarming project and for helping to teach our children
the importance of giving.
